Tooth Resorption

What is Tooth Resorption?

Tooth resorption is the process in which the body breaks down and absorbs part of your tooth, typically the root.  We often do not know the exact cause of root resorption in permanent teeth, but factors such as trauma, orthodontic treatment, gum disease, and high strength tooth bleaching have all been linked as possible causes.  The good news, most patients never develop tooth resorption as this is a rare phenomenon.  Resorption is normally asymptomatic, but may appear as a pink spot near the gum line.  It is important to see your endodontist as soon as possible to decide on the best treatment option.  Early detection is key to a successful outcome.
